Understanding Your GPA

What is a GPA?

Your GPA, or Grade Point Average, is a statistic that represents the average worth of all of your final grades obtained over the course of your academic career. Its purpose is to evaluate you (usually on a GPA scale of 1.0 to 4.0) and determine if your overall marks have been good or bad through your education. This value is used to see if you satisfy the prerequisites and criteria for the degree or university programs. In other words, just as your teachers and instructors award you a grade to examine your performance or accomplishment in your courses, your Grade Point Average is a number which is used to examine your progress or achievement in your university course. Your average GPA is a statistic that shows how well you did in your classes throughout the course of the semester, term, and year.

Every country, and even universities, compute the grade point average (GPA) differently. Your GPA varies depending on whether you attend the FUE, AUC, GUC, MIU, BUE, or other Egyptian universities. Understanding all GPA systems and formulas is a difficult task.

Here are different university GPA calculations in Egypt.

At the end of each semester and summer Session, you will receive a GPA based on the grades you earned in all of the courses taken during that semester. To find out how your GPA is calculated, follow these steps:

Step 1: Add the number of credit hours attached to each course—this is the total number of credit hours attempted.

Step 2: Calculate the total number of grade points earned for each course by multiplying the number of credit hours assigned to the course by the number of grade points equivalent to the letter grade received.

Step 3: Add the total number of grade points earned for all courses. This is the total number of grade points earned

Step 4: Divide the total number of grade points earned by the total number of credit hours attempted. This is your GPA calculated on a four-point scale.

Course Assessment and Grading System:

Students are evaluated and graded at the end of each course. The final marks given by the instructor in percentage for all courses except research project courses will be a weighted average of the marks earned in the three areas identified below.

Attendance/Participation/Projects/Tests: 30%

Midterm Exam: 30%

Final Exam: 40%

The percentage marks for each registered student in a course will appear as a letter grade with equivalent grade points per credit on his/her transcript according to the following course grading system:

German University in Cairo (GUC) GPA Calculations:

The GUC calculates GPA differently than most universities. Rather than the higher the GPA the better, it's the lower the GPA the better.

The GUC is a grading system that The European Credit Transfer System "ECTS" is the GPA system used at the GUC, with 0.7 being the best grade (A+) and 5 being the worst (F). A respectable grade point average (GPA) is around 2.5. A GPA of more than 3.7 (Probation) is considered poor performance.

British University in Egypt (BUE) GPA Calculations:

The educational system in the United Kingdom employs a variety of grades that may differ from those you were familiar with in high school or college. This does not imply that getting an A or passing a BUE module is simple. A 70 percent grade in a British university is just as challenging as an 85 percent grade in an Egyptian one. The table below displays the Egyptian marking system and its approximate equivalent in the United Kingdom.

A value (called points) is allocated to each letter grade:

A=4.0, B=3.0, and C=2.0, for example.

Multiply the course's number of credits by the value of each grade you received for each course you've taken.

Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport (AAST) GPA Calculations:

Cumulative GPA is calculated at the end of each term to determine if a student's education level is under academic supervision. It is calculated by multiplying the cumulative points earned by the student in all of the courses he has registered for up to the time of calculation by the total registered credit hours.

Misr International University (MIU) GPA Calculations:

The GPA ranges from 0.00 to 4.00 at MIU. The lowest value is 0.00, while the maximum value is 4.00. It is determined by multiplying the grade by the amount of credit hours in the course. MIU uses three GPA grading systems: semester GPA, cumulative GPA, and major GPA. Semester GPA is the GPA for a single semester, Cumulative GPA is the average graded of all courses taken over the years, and Major GPA is the grade average of all courses finished for the major.
